While world-class universities present themselves as champions of progress and inclusion, their homepages, the primary digital gateways for students, alumni, and scholars, routinely fail basic accessibility requirements. Our analysis of 50 elite institutions using the Lemon Hive SiteIQ Audit reveals that these aren't minor oversights; they are serious barriers to digital equity.

The Automated Score Illusion

Start with the mechanism that makes everything else possible: the perfect Lighthouse score.

Stanford boasts a Lighthouse accessibility score of 100. So do Princeton, Northwestern, and UC Berkeley. Reassuring. Official. Completely misleading.

Automated tools like Google Lighthouse check for machine-readable compliance. Alt attributes exist. The heading hierarchy is technically sound. Colour contrast passes basic thresholds. They do not measure whether a person using a screen reader, keyboard-only navigation, or cognitive differences can actually use your website.

The gap between a perfect automated score and genuine digital inclusion is where elite institutions hide.

Across the broader web, this gap is enormous. According to the 2026 WebAIM analysis of the top 1 million websites globally, 95.9% of homepages have detectable WCAG conformance failures. Yet many of these sites pass automated accessibility scores with flying colours.

For universities specifically, the problem is more acute. On average, education sector websites carry 48.9 accessibility errors per page, close to the global average of 56.1 errors but still a damning figure for institutions that claim to value inclusion [WebAIM 2026].


What Analysing 50 University Homepages With SiteIQ Actually Reveals

Our audit mapped critical accessibility failures. Critical issues block disabled users from accessing content or functionality.

The picture across our 50-university sample on desktop:

Critical barriers that block users entirely:

  • Georgia Tech: 2 critical issues
  • Caltech: 3 critical issues
  • Tsinghua University: 3 critical issues
  • University of Hong Kong: 2 critical issues
  • MIT, Cambridge, Oxford, Yale, Carnegie Mellon, University of Michigan: each carrying at least 1 critical barrier on its primary landing page

When institutions leading global technological innovation display total blockers on their homepages, it signals a systemic issue: digital inclusion is treated as an afterthought rather than an engineering standard.

Serious and moderate friction compounds the problem:

Serious issues cause immense friction. Users lose navigation context, experience degraded performance, face broken keyboard navigation. Moderate issues layer on missed opportunities for improvement.

  • University of Hong Kong: 12 serious + 12 moderate accessibility issues
  • Peking University: 10 serious + 12 moderate accessibility issues
  • Yale University: 8 serious + 8 moderate accessibility issues
  • Northwestern University: 5 serious + 10 accessibility issues
  • Carnegie Mellon: 7 serious + 9 accessibility issues

These aren't outliers. Across our 50 universities, 72% carried at least 1 critical issue. 94% had serious accessibility failures.

Common culprits: poor text to background colour contrast, missing alternative text for images, non-descriptive link labels such as "click here," and broken keyboard focus outlines.

The pattern is consistent across regions and endowment size.


The Webpage Carbon & Sustainability Problem

Here is what surprised us: institutions with severe accessibility failures almost always emit high carbon per page load. And vice versa.

Why? Same root cause. Bloated, unoptimised legacy code makes pages heavier. More energy to transmit and render. Higher carbon footprint. Simultaneously, that same tangled architecture makes it nearly impossible for screen readers to parse semantic structure.

The problems of accessibility and sustainability are not just overlapping concerns; they often stem from the same root cause: bloated, unoptimized legacy code.

Examples from our dataset:

  • University of Hong Kong: 7.64g CO2 per load, 2 critical, 12 serious and 12 moderate errors
  • Peking University: 14.18g CO2 per load, 1 critical, 10 serious and 12 moderate errors
  • UC Berkeley: 4.14g CO2 per load, 0 critical, 1 serious and 9 moderate errors
  • Harvard University: 6.35g CO2 per load, 0 critical, 5 serious and 8 moderate errors
  • Tsinghua University: 5.56g CO2 per load, 3 critical, 8 serious and 16 moderate errors
  • University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: 8.61g CO2 per load, 2 critical, 3 serious and 9 moderate errors

By contrast, institutions with stronger practice:

  • Oxford University: 0.52g CO2 per load, 1 critical, 0 serious and 0 moderate errors
  • MIT: 0.45g CO2 per load, 1 critical, 6 serious and 9 moderate errors
  • Princeton: 0.47g CO2 per load, 0 critical, 2 serious and 8 moderate errors
  • University of Edinburgh: 0.46g CO2 per load, 1 critical, 9 serious and 8 moderate errors

When a homepage exceeds 1g of carbon per load, it signals structural bloat. Unoptimised assets, legacy code, poor caching strategy. High emissions and low accessibility are symptoms of the same disease.

This matters beyond ethics. Carbon footprint is vital for every business. Prospective students increasingly care about institutional sustainability commitments. Employees and faculty consider it during hiring decisions. When your digital front door contradicts your sustainability messaging, credibility erodes.


The Lack of Accountability in Higher Education

Universities currently operate without significant market penalties for failing to provide accessible digital environments.

The consequences are often silent. A visually impaired applicant may simply give up on their application rather than posting a negative review on a review site. Similarly, disabled researchers might skip lab opportunities entirely without ever lodging a formal grievance.

While legal frameworks such as Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the US and public-sector regulations in the UK aim to drive compliance, institutional responses remain reactive. Digital accessibility is rarely treated as a core priority at the board level.

This lack of prioritisation allows technical debt to escalate. Legacy CMS platforms, outdated hosting, and fragmented departmental systems continue to pile up, creating a situation that requires a total architectural rethink rather than a simple patch.

The primary drivers for deprioritising accessibility include:

1. Absence of Financial Incentive: Accessible sites do not show an immediate impact on enrolment or donations, causing them to lose out in zero-sum budget battles.

2. Modernisation Barriers: Meaningful fixes often require expensive platform upgrades that clash with previous departmental investments.

3. Fragmented Oversight: Responsibility is split between IT and Marketing, leading to a diffusion of accountability where no one takes ownership of the issue.

4. Reliance on Surface-Level Metrics: Positive results from automated tools like Lighthouse often give leadership a false sense of security, allowing them to move on to other topics.


Digital Infrastructure Leads Need to Know: The Sector Context

For digital infrastructure operators and ed-tech builders, the stakes are higher.

Across the broader web, just 3% is considered genuinely accessible. Yet 60% of images lack alternative text, 51% of form inputs are missing proper labels, and 46% of pages have non-descriptive links [WebAIM 2026].

The ed-tech and digital infrastructure sector is directly responsible for amplifying these failures. Every CMS choice, every framework decision, every default template you ship either embeds accessibility or ignores it.

Universities are your customers. When you sell them platforms and infrastructure that make accessibility hard, they don't prioritise it. When you default to modern, lightweight architectures, accessibility becomes easier to achieve and maintain.


What Real Progress Looks Like

Fixing this requires three things. Not one. All three.

First: Visibility, not compliance theatre. Continuous monitoring tools that flag new issues the moment they appear, not annual audits that reassure before being filed away. If every broken link, missing alt attribute, and colour contrast failure surfaced within hours, not months, accountability shifts from yes/no to continuous improvement.

Second: Architecture that makes accessibility the default, not the exception. Modern, lightweight platforms like Next.js and Astro with proper semantic HTML require significantly less gymnastics to render accessible pages. Legacy monolithic CMSs make accessibility a separate concern, always fighting the platform. For infrastructure leads, the choice of technology matters more than the audit tool.

Third: Accountability that spans teams. Content editors need to understand why heading hierarchy matters. Designers need to know why colour contrast is non-negotiable. Procurement needs to evaluate platforms on accessibility metrics, not just features. This isn't IT's job alone. It's a cultural shift.

The uncomfortable part: this requires investment. Not a workshop, not a policy, not a tool.
